Android smart phones gain favor in the board room Motorola Motorola's Droid 2 is among the company's more recent Android smart phones. By Suzanne Choney Android isn't only making headway in the consumer smart phone market. Google's open-source operating system for mobile devices is finding favor in the corporate world, according to ChangeWave Research. The company's August survey of 1,602 corporate IT buyers "shows there is at least one big winner in the business smart phone market this quarter," and it's Android, ChangeWave said. "When we asked respondents which mobile operating system their company currently provides, the Android OS (16 percent) was the clear momentum winner, registering a 6-point jump in market share just since our previous survey in May. All told, over the past nine months the Android OS has seen an astonishing five-fold increase in corporate market share." Research In Motion's BlackBerrys, long the preferred choice of the enterprise market for the devices' sturdiness and security, "still holds the dominant share of the corporate market" with 66 percent, "but it has dropped 3 points since May in terms of current share," ChangeWave said. Apple's iPhone, with a 31 percent share, "remains strong, ticking higher by 1 percent" than in the last report from May. In the next quarter, ChangeWave found, 35 percent of survey respondents said they plan to buy smart phones in the next quarter, and that there will be "two big momentum winners over the next 90 days — HTC and Motorola," leading manufacturers of Android phones. "Both are reaping the benefit of the huge corporate demand increase for Android OS phones," said Paul Carton, ChangeWave vice president of research. HTC makes the Droid Incredible, Evo 4G and several other Android phones. Motorola has had strong success with its original Droid line of smart phones. "With two new releases (the Droid 2 and Droid X) following upon its highly successful original Droid model, Motorola shows renewed momentum in the corporate market," Carton said. Android phones have been a big hit among consumers, with several studies pointing to Android's growing strength. And recently, research firm Gartner said it believes that Android and Symbian (Nokia's mobile operating system) together will account for nearly 60 percent of mobile OS sales by 2014. |
