Housing Dip a Plus for DIRECTV? Retrans Resolved, But ...
28 Aug 2010 - 13:07 by soullezz Industry News |

"Anemic housing sales offer buying opportunity," writes Collins Stewart analyst Tom Eagan and he's not talking real estate. Rather, he suggests that DIRECTV and Cablevision may outperform their peers as home sales continue to dip and thus present strong buy possibilities. DIRECTV earns Eagan's nod based on its cash flow growth and equity shrink; Cablevision gets kudos as "most innovative" and "more competitive."

In other news, DIRECTV's retrans dispute with several News-Press & Gazette broadcast stations was resolved with what DIRECTV called "a fair agreement" under which the DBS provider will continue to carry the stations. That the dispute was resolved was, of course, no particular surprise. Even with a "fair" agreement, the weight of retrans these days falls far more heavily on MVPDs meaning that disagreements can rarely last long. That much was obvious in a report from Palm Springs Desert Sun which quoted Jonathan Taplin, a professor in the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism told the Palm Springs Desert Sun. On broadcast blackouts, he noted, “If it happens, it happens for a day or two. The cable (and satellite) guys always give in.”

as seen on skyreport
