SES ASTRA Supports European Television Industry's Initiative

The European Television broadcasting industry has put forward an initiative for the introduction of 3D Television in Europe. SES ASTRA, the leading Direct-to-Home satellite system in Europe , major public and private European broadcasters and the consumer electronics industry have wholeheartedly backed the initiative.
As part of the initiative, the industry was expected to arrive at a consensus regarding the minimum technical specifications for the introduction of 3D television.
It has been decided that initial satellite 3d transmissions would use either the side-by-side - for 1080i resolution, where two pictures will be arranged horizontally in one frame, or the top-bottom format for 720p resolution, which will have two pictures arranged vertically in one frame. Both the formats were expected to be compatible with existing HD or High Definition set top boxes.
The delivery of two different images for the left and right eye is necessary in order to create a 3D stereoscopic experience for the viewer.
In addition, there would also be Free-to-air 3D services that used Digital Video Broadcasting mechanisms. This would enable the display to automatically switch between 2D and 3D broadcasts.
Ferdinand Kayser, president and CEO of SES ASTRA, indicated that they were proud to be part of venture that would become the next driver for the consumer electronics market ensuring that broadcast TV remained the leader in the entertainment media.
The results of the initiative had been outstanding throughout Europe and had once again brought to focus SES ASTRA's ability to bring together key-industry players, who would drive innovation in the field of broadcasting technology.
SES ASTRA's satellite fleet currently comprises 16 satellites. The ASTRA satellite system delivers services to more than 125 million DTH and cable households and transmits more than 2,600 analogue and digital television and radio channels.
In a related news release, SES ASTRA, an SES company , announced that it has closed a distribution agreement with Starsat to market its satellite broadband access ASTRA2Connect in Albania. It has added ASTRA2Connect to its portfolio of services to offer its customers a reliable satellite broadband solution at competitive prices.
