COUNCIL BLUFFS — City officials are moving forward with a plan to prohibit satellite dishes in front or side yards. A proposed ordinance to address the issue also would limit the size of satellite dishes in permitted areas.

A public hearing is set for the March 12 City Council meeting.

"From time to time, complaints will come in about someone who put a dish in the front yard, so we decided to draw up some new language," said Rose Brown of the Community Development Department.

The department came up with three options and decided to proceed with one that prohibits a dish in the front yard of any residential address or side yard at a corner address. The proposal also decrees that all future satellite dishes in residential districts may not be larger than 1 meter in diameter.

The placement restriction could be waived if the homeowner proves that placement is the only way to receive a quality signal.

This would need to be confirmed by someone knowledgeable in communication technology and/or the installation company.

The two options the department rejected would have either had the same front and side yard restrictions but required a dish smaller than 1 meter in diameter, or done nothing.
