DIRECTV & DISH Unveil New Online Content

Put both DIRECTV and DISH into the online everything crowd as both DBS providers offer new services:

• DIRECTV's Online Sunday Ticket: Watch for the NFL Sunday Ticket to debut nationwide online under the NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go label this year after a trial last year in Manhattan. The service will launch a week before the season starts and, contrary to some reports on the blogosphere, it is not available to all non-subscribers. Says a DIRECTV spokesman, "This is a product for customers who can't get DIRECTV and we have a process to verify that" via a series of questions. Customers who are deemed eligible for DIRECTV will need to subscribe in order to get the service. Existing Sunday Ticket subscribers can get the online/mobile package (it rolls in the previously announced mobile features) for $49.95/month. The To-Go service includes up to 14 full games, the Red Zone Channel, video highlights and more.

• DishOnline Debut: DISH added a feather to its "TV Everywhere" cred (with or without the trademarked name) with the debut of DishOnline.com. The full menu of shows and movies (more than 150,000) are available only to DISH subs; content providers include some pretty big names such as all four major broadcasters, the National Geographic Channel, USA and MTV. The site also features some free video to lure new subscribers into the DISH fold but rental content (AKA the latest and greatest) is available only to DISH subs. Given its penchant for in-front-of-the-crowd technology, the DISH TV Everywhere version provides a robust search engine, allowing customers to browse for content by title, network, actor or genre. Best of all, the online content will be ad-free (for now anyway).
